Merging their two London offices into one headquarters enabled The Alzheimer's Society to design a work space that considered the needs of people with dementia. Understanding the effects of dementia was key to developing the concept. Public areas within the office were dementia friendly to help people feel comfortable, by incorporating design features to maximise their independence and increase both self esteem and confidence.
A simple route through the predominantly open plan space allowed easy navigation, with limited glazing and few doors minimising confusion. A quiet room provided peace and quiet for visitors.
Way finding, colour coding, easily identifiable facilities and special signage were all incorporated into the interior space.
Facilities included a resource centre, training suite and media centre that were accessible to people with dementia, carers, members of the medical profession and the general public.
