Ready for a close-up

A dozen projects from around the world illustrate the dramatic and unique aspects innovative choices of flooring can add to projects, ranging from public, office, hotel, exhibition and retail6 May 2010

Project: Refurbishment of London office of Morningstar
Flooring: Reception area features a Knauf floor
Architect: Artillery architecture and Interior Design

Following recent acquisitions and increased staffing levels, worldwide investment research provider Morningstar required a tenancy fit-out to accommodate the expansion, with open-plan space for 154 desks. Artillery was brought in to design and fit out the £1.9m refurbishment of the ground floor at Oliver’s Yard in the City of London.

Artillery’s brief was to maximize exposure to daylight, ensure flexibility of open-plan concepts and use space in a way that respects public, semi-private and private requirements, empowers employees and encourages creativity.

‘Morningstar’s design guidelines call for the use of “gutsy”, rough, industrial materials that contrast with a more refined furniture palette,’ explains Artillery director Deborah Allen. ‘In the reception area, which features a large steel desk, we installed an exposed raised Knauf floor, made of recycled newspaper and cardboard, then sealed, which acts as a natural transition from the paved outside courtyard into the ground floor interior. The concrete columns and rainwater pipes were also exposed.

‘The product we used is the 38mm Knauf GIFAFloor FHB panelled floor, sealed with Knauf clear protection and a Dulux Floor sealant.

‘It’s the colour of limestone but, as an industrial product, is therefore not perfect. It has imperfections and manufacturing markings. Knauf doesn’t recommend this product is used as an exposed raised floor so this was a one-off installation.’
